Refunds
You can refund Swish charges up to 365 days after the payment completes. Refunds usually take a few minutes to complete. Swish supports full, partial, and multiple partial refunds. The total amount of all refunds can’t exceed the amount of the original payment.
Refund process
Swish refunds are asynchronous. Stripe tracks the refund until Swish reports whether it succeeded or failed.
Tracking refunds
To check a refund’s status, open the payment in the Dashboard and click View details on the refund entry. You can also retrieve the Refund object and check its status field.
Stripe notifies you of the final status through a refund.updated or refund.failed webhook event. When a refund succeeds, the Refund object’s status changes to succeeded. If the refund fails, its status changes to failed and Stripe returns the amount to your Stripe balance. You must then refund the customer using another method.
Disputes
Swish doesn’t support the standard dispute process. If a customer has a concern about a Swish payment, they need to contact you directly.

Review these limitations before you add Swish to your integration:
- Checkout doesn’t support Swish in subscription mode or setup mode.
- Express Checkout Element doesn’t support Swish.
Connect
You can use Stripe Connect with Swish to process payments on behalf of a connected account.
You can use the following charge types:
Customer experience
- Select Swish The customer selects Swish at checkout.
- Authorize the payment On mobile, the customer is redirected to the Swish app. On desktop, they scan a QR code with the Swish app. They authenticate with Swedish BankID and authorize within three minutes.
- Complete the payment The customer sees a confirmation in the Swish app. On mobile devices, the customer then returns to your site or app, and Stripe immediately notifies you whether the payment succeeded or failed.
Payment flows
The customer follows a mobile redirect flow to pay with Swish.
Customers pay with Swish by using one of the following methods:
- Mobile: Customers follow a mobile redirect from your website or mobile app to the Swish app, where they authorize the payment, then return to your website or mobile app.
- Desktop: Customers scan a QR code you present on your website using the Swish app, which allows them to authorize the payment.
Customers must authorize the payment within three minutes. If authorization expires, the PaymentIntent returns to requires_payment_method. Successful PaymentIntents transition to succeeded.
Transaction identifiers
The Swish app’s Message field is set automatically to your business name. Stripe prefers your legal entity name and falls back to your displayable business name. For destination charges that use on_behalf_of, Stripe uses the connected account’s business name. Stripe removes unsupported characters and truncates the value to 50 characters.
Set a custom payment reference with payment_method_options[swish][reference]. The reference must contain 1–35 letters, numbers, or hyphens.
For payments processed through the related setting, Stripe sends this reference to the related setting as the statement descriptor. the related setting or the customer’s bank might display a different value on the bank statement.
For Swish payments, Stripe operates as the merchant of record. Therefore, Stripe’s name appears as the recipient of payments in the Swish app and as the statement descriptor in the customer’s bank statements. Your business name appears in the message field in the Swish app. The factoring addendum in the Swish terms applies.
Swish’s Message field and the related setting reference mapping are set as described above and aren’t controlled by general statement-descriptor settings.
For general Connect statement-descriptor ownership, direct charges use the connected account. For destination charges and separate charges and transfers, charges that use on_behalf_of use the connected account; otherwise, they use the platform. These settings don’t control the Swish Message field or the related setting reference mapping. Learn more about statement descriptors with Connect.
After the payment completes, expand latest_charge on the PaymentIntent and retrieve the customer’s bank reference from latest_charge.payment_method_details.swish.payment_reference. The payment provider returns this identifier, which differs from the custom reference you set in payment_method_options[swish][reference].
Enable Swish
If you use the Stripe front-end products, enable Swish in your payment method settings. Stripe automatically determines which payment methods are most relevant to each customer.
If your integration requires manually listing payment methods, learn how to manually configure Swish as a payment method.
