Stripe Terminal allows you to use unattended readers to accept card payments in locations such as parking garages, car washes, and self-serve kiosks. An unattended transaction occurs when a business representative isn’t present to oversee the transaction.

Before you begin

This feature is only available on the Verifone the related setting. This guide assumes you have a the related setting reader.
At this time, only Visa, Mastercard, American Express, and Discover support unattended payments.
You must ensure your unattended deployment complies with all applicable laws and card network rules. This includes providing all mandatory disclosures and signage before transaction completion, and providing your customers with a physical or digital receipt as required. Non-compliance might lead to fines, chargebacks, and other penalties.

Create an unattended location

Configure unattended payments on Terminal through the Location object. When creating a Location object, you can mark the Location as unattended. The default setting for Terminal locations is attended. All card readers registered to an unattended location are set to unattended and download the necessary configurations to support unattended payments. You don’t need to make any changes when creating PaymentIntents.

You must also indicate the type of unattended setting of each reader:

On-Premise : Employee managed location with some staff presence (for example, a self-checkout station)
Off-Premise : Fully self-serve location, managed remotely (for example, a vending machine or a fully autonomous parking garage)

After you create a location, you can’t change from one state ( unattended or attended) to the other. To change the location state, create a new Location object, and delete the one you don’t want. To switch a reader between unattended and attended, unregister the reader from the initial location and reregister it to the new location. Create unattended and attended locations as needed to support both types of payments at the same physical address.

Register readers to accept payments

Next, register your reader to accept payments. Complete all the steps in Connect a reader. Verifone readers are compatible with all generally available Terminal integrations.

After you register your readers, you can collect unattended payments. You don’t need to make any changes to PaymentIntents.
