Test the Stripe Tax Extension

Test your setup and troubleshoot tax calculation issues.

Use a Stripe sandbox to test the Stripe Tax Extension for WooCommerce without affecting your live Stripe Tax data. If you encounter issues, use the troubleshooting steps on this page to resolve them.

Test in a sandbox

Stripe Tax calculations in a sandbox don’t incur fees. In sandbox mode, the extension sends tax calculations and transactions from your store to your Stripe sandbox instead of your live Stripe account.

Caution

Sandbox mode only changes how the Stripe Tax Extension handles tax activity. It doesn’t change your payment provider’s mode. To prevent real payments, enable test mode with WooPayments or the Stripe payment extension before testing your checkout flow.

Connect to a sandbox

1. In the Stripe Dashboard , open or create a sandbox.
2. In the sandbox, install the WooCommerce Tax Stripe App .
3. In the app settings, copy the restricted API key. If the API keys aren’t visible, click View API keys .
4. In WordPress, go to WooCommerce > Settings > Stripe Tax .
5. For Mode , select Sandbox , then paste the restricted API key into Secret key (test mode) .
6. Click Test connection to verify the key, then click Save changes .
7. Confirm that you have a registration .

After you connect the extension, test a customer address in the registered jurisdiction by creating a manual order or using your checkout flow.

Create a manual order

1. In WordPress, go to WooCommerce > Orders .
2. On the Orders page, click Add new order .
3. Add the customer and order information, then click Recalculate .

Test the checkout page

1. View your shop as a customer.
2. Add a product to your cart.
3. Enter an address in the registered jurisdiction.

The checkout page displays the calculated tax.

Return to live mode

After you finish testing, reconnect the extension to your live Stripe account:

1. In the Stripe Dashboard, switch to your live account and install the WooCommerce Tax Stripe App if it isn’t already installed.
2. In the app settings, copy the restricted API key.
3. In WordPress, go to WooCommerce > Settings > Stripe Tax . For Mode , select Live , then paste the restricted API key into Secret key (live mode) .
4. Click Test connection , then click Save changes .
5. Confirm that you have a registration .
6. If you enabled test mode for your payment provider, return it to live mode.

Future Stripe Tax calculations and transactions from your store display in your live Stripe account.

Troubleshoot the extension

Use the following checks if the extension doesn’t calculate the expected tax or if you can’t find a transaction in Stripe.

Resolve missing tax

Stripe Tax applies tax only when the customer is in a jurisdiction where you have an active registration and the product is taxable in that jurisdiction.

If tax isn’t added to an order:

• Verify that the extension is configured and connected to the intended Stripe account or sandbox.
• Verify that tax is enabled:
• Go to WooCommerce > Settings > General , then select Enable tax rates and calculations .
• Go to WooCommerce > Settings > Stripe Tax , then select Enable Stripe Tax .

If the extension still doesn’t add tax, check the API responses for details about why the tax rate is zero. The product might not be taxable for the customer in that jurisdiction. For more information, see Zero tax amounts and reverse charges.

Resolve multiple taxes

An order can show multiple taxes with the same name and amount when more than one tax applies to a line item. This isn’t an error.

To show customers a single total tax amount, go to Settings > Tax in WooCommerce, then select As a single total for Display tax totals.

Find transactions in Stripe

If you can’t find a transaction in your Stripe reports, confirm that you’re viewing the same live account or sandbox in the Dashboard that the extension uses.

After the extension records a completed transaction, it can take a few minutes to display on the Tax Transactions page.

Review error logs

To investigate an error, go to WooCommerce > Status > Logs in WordPress.

Limitations

The extension doesn’t support ship-from addresses.
