What’s new
We’re removing support for creating new amount_off coupons with a forever duration and applying these to subscriptions, subscription items, subscription schedules, invoices, invoice items, quotes, or checkout sessions.
This deprecation was reversed in 2026-01-28.clover.
Why is this a breaking change?
We’re removing the ability to create coupons with both a discount (using the amount_off field) and indefinite length (with duration: 'forever').
You also can no longer use existing indefinite discount coupons, or related promotion codes, with any of the following:
- Subscriptions
- Subscription Items
- Subscription Schedules
- Invoices
- Invoice Items
- Quotes
- Checkout Sessions created with API version 2025-03-31. basil or later
- Payment Links created in the Dashboard or with API version 2025-03-31. basil or later
- Pricing tables created in the Dashboard
Impact
You can no longer attach forever and amount_off coupons to subscriptions. Instead, directly attach amount_off coupons to the invoices you want to discount. You can do this through the Invoices API, the Dashboard, or in response to a webhook event.
Upgrade
- View your current API version in Workbench.
- If you use an SDK, upgrade to the corresponding SDK version for this API version.
- If you don’t use an SDK, update your API requests to include Stripe-Version: 2025-03-31. basil
- Upgrade the API version used for webhook endpoints .
- Test your integration against the new version.
- If you use Connect, test your Connect integration .
- In Workbench, perform the upgrade . You can roll back the version for 72 hours.
