Pass your costs to connected accounts

Pass your costs to connected accounts

Configure pricing for network and other costs you pass through to your connected accounts.

As a Connect platform using the buy-rate model, you can use cost passthrough to charge your connected accounts for costs that your platform pays related to the Stripe services you facilitate for them.

  • Network cost passthrough : Offer IC+ pricing to your connected accounts instead of charging a blended rate for all card payments, then determine and collect fees from each connected account. Contact your account team to enable and configure network cost passthrough .
  • Passthrough for other costs Private preview : You can also pass other costs, such as dispute or next-day settlement fees, to your connected accounts. You can charge the same amount that Stripe charges your platform or set a custom price. Stripe collects the fee and makes it available in reporting. Request access

Eligibility

Passing costs to your connected accounts has the following requirements:

  • Stripe charges fees to your platform, not your connected accounts. Any fees that Stripe bills to your connected account directly are ineligible for passthrough.
  • Supported Stripe costs billed to your platform are attributable to a connected account.
  • Your platform uses direct charges or destination charges. Separate charges and transfers aren’t supported.
  • To pass through network costs, your platform must be on IC+ pricing with Stripe.
  • To pass through other costs, your platform and connected accounts must be located in Canada, the United Kingdom, the United States, or the eurozone. They don’t need to be located in the same region.

Set pricing

Configure default pricing for each individual fee across all eligible connected accounts in the Cost Passthrough tab of the no-code platform pricing tool.

Configure network cost passthrough separately

You must apply network cost passthrough to individual connected accounts. You can’t set a default for all connected accounts.

  1. In the editor, set fallback pricing as either:
  • Cost passthrough : Charge your connected accounts the same rate that your platform pays Stripe.
  • Custom fee : Charge your connected accounts a custom fee. Fixed fees are capped at 50 USD , and variable fees are capped at 5% of the transaction amount, except for Smart Dispute fees, which are capped at 50% of the transaction amount.
  1. Save the pricing rule to go into effect immediately, or schedule the pricing scheme to go into effect in the future.
  2. (Optional) Segment pricing by connected account country by adding conditional rules to your pricing scheme.
  3. (Optional) Customize pricing for an individual connected account in the Pricing section of the Connected accounts page in the Dashboard.
  4. After you set pricing, notify your connected accounts of fees you charge them and the cost of each fee.

Fee collection

You can choose to collect costs from connected accounts as they occur or on a billing schedule.

  • Immediate fee collection : By default, Stripe collects eligible fees from the connected account’s Stripe balance within hours after charging your platform. Stripe batches fees by fee type.
  • End of billing window fee collection : Stripe charges connected accounts at the end of the billing window through a bank debit or invoice.

Manage fee collection settings in the Connected accounts page in the Dashboard. These settings apply to both payment application fees and passthrough fees.

Reconciliation and reporting

You can view costs that you collect in the following ways:

  • Transactions All Activity Dashboard page : View all activity that impacts your platform balance.
  • Itemized balance change from activity report : View platform balance changes over time, including when fees are collected.
  • Connect Margin report : View fees charged to your connected accounts in the fee _ monetization column, regardless of fee collection time. Reporting is available at the platform, connected account, and transaction levels.

Connected accounts can view the costs you pass through to them in the following ways:

  • All Fees report : View all costs charged to the connected account, by fee type.
  • Fees API : View an itemized breakout of passthrough fees, linked to the originating Stripe fee incurred by your platform.
  • Itemized balance change from activity report : View payments balance changes over time, including collection of cost passthrough fees.
  • Network cost passthrough report : View network cost passthrough fees only.

Negative balance liability

Debiting connected accounts immediately for passthrough costs might cause a negative balance for the connected account. Stripe handles this scenario according to your platform’s negative balance liability configuration.

  • If Stripe holds negative balance liability, you can still collect passthrough costs against a negative balance. Stripe pauses connected account payouts until the balance becomes positive.
  • If your platform holds negative balance liability, Stripe debits your platform reserve balance to collect passthrough costs, then repays your reserve balance as the connected account’s balance recovers.
